Self Storage Tips and Tricks

Preparation is Key:

Before storing your items, thoroughly clean and dry them. Dirt can scratch surfaces or leave residue, and moisture can cause mould and rust. Ensure everything is completely dry to prevent dampness from spoiling your belongings.

Use Proper Storage Materials:

Opt for plastic containers for clothing to shield against humidity. For sensitive items like books or artwork, acid-free boxes are best. Also, consider placing items on pallets to promote airflow and prevent moisture from seeping up from concrete floors.

Moisture Control:

Install a vapour barrier on walls and under the floor to block external moisture. Regularly replace desiccants within your containers to absorb residual moisture. These are available at packing supplies stores and help keep your unit dry.

DIY Solutions:

For additional moisture control, use DIY dehumidifiers such as charcoal briquettes or clay kitty litter in your unit. These materials absorb moisture effectively and need to be replaced every few months to maintain efficiency.

Special Care for Leather and Hard Surfaces:

Treat leather goods with a cleaner followed by a vinegar-water mix to prevent mould. Protect with wax or conditioner based on the leather type. Wipe down hard surfaces with bleach to eliminate any potential mould spores.

Smart Packing:

Pack your unit during dry weather. If rain is unavoidable, cover your items with tarps during transport. Always elevate cardboard boxes off the floor using pallets or tarps to avoid direct contact with damp surfaces.

Implementing these steps will help keep your storage space dry and your possessions safe from mould.
