Customer Update: Guidelines for Batteries in Self Storage
Lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries are increasingly common in households and businesses, but they also pose significant risks if improperly stored. At Swift Storage, your safety and the safety of our facilities are our top priorities. Here’s what you need to know about storing batteries:
Prohibited Dangerous Goods
Batteries, particularly lithium-ion and lead-acid types, are classified as dangerous goods and are prohibited from being stored in our units under the self-storage agreement.
Risks Associated with Batteries
Lithium-ion Batteries (Class 9 Dangerous Goods):
- Used in electronics and tools, these batteries pose risks of fire, explosion, and toxic smoke.
- Hazards arise from thermal runaway due to overcharging, physical damage, or exposure to moisture.
Lead-acid Batteries (Class 8 Corrosive Dangerous Goods):
- Common in vehicles and backup systems, these batteries contain corrosive electrolytes and produce flammable gases during charging.
- Poor storage can lead to leakage or fires.
Main Hazards Include:
- Fire and explosion
- Toxic or flammable gases
- Electrolyte leakage
- High temperatures and short circuits
Safe Storage Practices
To avoid incidents, customers should avoid placing items containing batteries into storage. Ensure all battery-powered devices are emptied and batteries are removed before storing items.
Customer Awareness
We understand that moving and storing items can be a hectic time, and customers may not always consider the risks associated with their goods. Please take a moment to review the facility rules and your self-storage agreement, which outline prohibited items, including batteries.
We use multiple methods to raise awareness, including:
- Facility signage
- Digital check-ins
- Highlighting restrictions in the storage agreement
